I'm finally starting to get my head around the whole phd thing. No, I haven't chosen a topic yet (what a stupid suggestion!) but I've started making decisions about how I'm going to go about it. JCU have guaranteed me a spot (they're fairly desperate right now) so it shouldn't be too hard to get in. ;) I don't know that they would've been my first choice, but given my reluctance to go back to the Uni lifestyle I think it's a good option. This way I can continue working at the Division (also not my first choice) and continue to make at least a reasonable about of money. If I throw in a few aerobics classes a week (may as well get paid to exercise) I should still be on a decent amount of money, but within the working constraints that the Uni has set. At this stage it seems like a feasible plan.
I must admit that I am a little sad at not leaving Cairns. I really had my heart set on bigger and better things. Hopefully though, approaching it from this angle will still leave me enough money to take holidays each year. They won't be the big European adventures I'd been hoping for, but I guess I really need to see the bigger picture here.
I am feeling good about it all though. I have a much clearer picture in my head. I realised this morning as I was job hunting that new employees are not going to allow me to manipulate my hours the way that I think the Division will. I'll have a chat to the boss about it tomorrow and make sure that they are still supportive, and then I guess we'll go from there. Exciting and scary! Step 1 - Pick a topic!!!! Why is it soooo hard????!!!???!!!
