Inspiration Needed

Well, I'm thinking about a trip overseas. Hmmm... thinking suggests it just may not happen, let me rephrase. I am planning a trip overseas. Given that Australia is so far away from everything and I just bought a house, it is highly likely that it will take me a while to get the money together (~12monts) but I'm looking for inspiration so that I can start planning and have something in my head to work towards.

Call me a nerd but if possible I think I'd like to do a half-marathon while I'm there. Suggestions...? Ideas...? Where would you go if you were me?

What about the International half marathon at Niagra Falls, October 2010?

This is the venue my brother ran a few years ago. The only marathon to start in one country and finish in another!

Plus (MEGA bonus) it's about 45mins from dear old Woodstock and your long-time Canadian buddy you've yet to meet face to face!!! Are you surprised I would suggest Canada ;)

Actually I was kind of hoping you would. Hmmm... October is good as well because it gives me plenty of time to get money/training/time off all organised. I can't believe it starts in one country and finishes in another. That sounds awesome, and I'm guessing from the name that it goes through some fairly beautiful scenery.

Thinking very seriously about it... Is it really that close to where you are?

Yes it's that close!! Niagra Falls is GORGEOUS - marathon aside the day you visit me is the day I bring you to Niagra Falls - :D It's that lovely.

There are two cities named Niagra Falls - one on each side of the Canada/US border (i.e. in this instance the Niagra River) The marathon starts on the American side (in Buffalo) and then you cross the Peace Bridge and the bulk of the run is in Canada, finishing in Fort Erie.

Certainly check out the website I mentioned above, and look at this one too.

I may have told you before that when my brother ran the Niagra Falls marathon my Mom and I took the car and drove ahead of him to meet him at check points - every half hour or so we would make sure he had kleenex, or energy bars or water - whatever he needed, then we were able to drive ahead to the finish line and watch him cross. (Then we picked him off the ground, when he collapsed - ha ha, just kidding) If you choose to come to Canada for your half-marathon Chris and I could do the same for you!!! Not to mention that you would have free accommodations (our guest room is all ready and you could stay absolutely as long as you like), that could defray the cost of the flight a bit... It would be soooo awesome.

Wow!! That one sounds awesome!!!

I'd love to go to hundreds of places so if I start listing them, I'll be here forever!!

If you do the 1/2 @ Niagra Falls in Oct 2010 I'll do the marathon. No strings. No need to travel or stay together etc. I have some good running mates in Canada who I keep promising to visit and run Canadian events with. Could be a good "mutual project"???

Are you serious Liz?? Yes! I am definitely in now. It's exactly the project that I need for 2010. I don't think I'll be marathon ready yet so the half will probably be my event again. Who knows? Twelve months is a long time (but then again I move really slowly...).

This just gets more and more exciting by the second. Liz, if you're keen I'm keen. Kristina, are you really keen for me to come stay awhile with you and Chris?

Liz - if we seriously go all the way to Canada we will at the very least be doing the diet coke and python thing!

Oh I'm seriously keen! Stephanie - mi casa est su casa!!

And Liz I know you mentioned you have Canadian friends to visit but you'd be more than welcome as well!

Chris and I have a big old house and we would be thrilled to have visitors!!!

Please please please come to Niagra Falls!!!

Let's Do It!

I'll have some softening and squaring away to do at home but it's do-able in all senses.

And Kristina, thanks so much for your offer of hospitality. Greatly appreciated. Not knowing the geography of Canada at all I'll liaise with my Canadian based friends and work through the practicalities and let you know.
