Stephanie is committing facebook suicide.
I was reading an article this morning in Marie Claire (stop laughing!) about the amount of information that is available to people on facebook, the way we use it as a means of keeping in contact when we're too lazy to actually meet someone face to face and also the way people use facebook as a means of attaining celebrity and presenting an image of how they want others to view their life. I read the article and I couldn't help but reflect on how true it was.
The article presented some ideas that I had been thinking about for some time. I have to admit that I too am guilty to some degree of cultivating an image on facebook, and I can't help but wonder why. Most of the people in my friends list are people that I never actually see in person, so honestly what does it matter what they think or how they perceive me?
The article also went on to say how most people use the following as their passwords:
- their partners name
- their pets names
- their nickname
- their date of birth
- or some combination of the above
When you think about it, for most of us all of that information is actually available on facebook, perhaps not in information that we've written ourselves, but in comments on pictures or on wall posts. In an age where we should be guarding our identities and privacy we seem to feel a need to put every detail of our lives on a website for all the world to see.
As a fairly private person who, let's be real here, is also somewhat of a loner why on earth would I have a webpage with all my details in one place for the world to see? This blog is a slightly different manner (good luck tracking me down off the information I have on here...), but as for facebook, I think it might be time for it to go.
